The Watts RO filters in five stages to ensure that your drinking water is as healthy and clean as possible. Once the system is connected, water passes through a 5-micron sediment filter that traps particulate matter–such as dirt, rust, and silt–that can affect the taste and appearance of your water. Next, a 5-micron carbon block filter reduces chlorine taste and odour, as well as other materials that can give water a bad taste. For the third stage, another 5-micron carbon block filter further reduces chlorine, as well as difficult-to-remove chloramines.

Reverse Osmosis

The system’s fourth stage of filtration is especially important, as it involves the passage of water through the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane.

This semi-permeable membrane effectively removes arsenic, lead, perchlorate, chromium, copper, TDS (total dissolved solids), sodium, and a long list of other water contaminants. It also removes parasitic cysts, such as giardia and cryptosporidia.

The fifth stage of filtration utilizes a high quality GAC filter, which works as a final polishing filter when the water leaves the storage tank on its way up to your faucet. The end result is consistently great-tasting water at just pennies per gallon.

THE REVIEW

The Watts WP5-50 is a 5 stage Reverse Osmosis filter which as you would expect produces excellent water quality with many of the well-known contaminants removed. The Watts WP5-50 Premier Five-Stage Manifold Reverse Osmosis Water filter is the easiest of all the reverse osmosis type systems we have reviewed and is the cheapest to maintain. Many of our users had have bought water filters in the past and all of them commented on how easy the Watts WP5 was to install compared to other RO units they have used. One astute reviewer conducted his own tests using a TDS (total dissolvable solids) testing kit, and found that the Watts WP5 reduced the TDS in his tap water from 300 to 15, which is very impressive.  The filters for the Watts WP5 need replacing every six months and cost around $40, the cheapest we have seen do far.

However  70% of reviewers said the unit makes a very loud gurgling noise when it is refilling and an even louder hissing noise when you turn the tap on and off which can last for up to 20 minutes. One user compared the hissing noise to a frying pan.

Other users mentioned that some components were either missing or damaged when the unit arrived, but also praised Watts for how quickly the sent out replacement parts. One reviewer remarked “The support rep was kind, friendly and extremely helpful”. You will also need to be aware that the faucet (tap) which you see on the product picture has been discontinued and replaced with a plastic version which has been described as “flimsy” and “cheaper looking” by people some purchasers.

Recommendation

We recommend the Watts WP5-50 Premier Five-Stage Manifold Reverse Osmosis Water filter, as it produces good quality drinking water, is fairly easy to install and is not expensive to maintain. In addition Watts have an excellent customer service team who will respond to any problems or queries you may have. The Zuvo ‘puration’ process reduces contaminants from tap water sources. The process filters impurities gained on the journey from your water treatment plant or well through the pipes in your house to the tap in your kitchen–while preserving the water’s natural and healthy mineral content.

The Zuvo Water Purator mimics nature’s water cleansing process by exposing tap water to ultraviolet light and ozone, effectively reducing water-borne bacteria and microbes, trapping particles and dissolved solids in a carbon filter, and exposing the filtered water to a final ultraviolet pass before it leaves the unit.

The Review

The Zuvo ZP125 uses a patented 5-step drinking water improvement process called “puration”, which removes lead, cysts, chlorine, sacchararmocyces/cerevisiae and has an ultra violet lamp to kill off bacteria in the water. All the reviews say that the water quality I very good, 95% of people who bought the product would recommend it. The Zuvo ZPS125 is designed to be installed under your sink, however many users love how the ultra violet light feature looks when the tap is opened so they keep the unit on the countertop. The unit is also small and portable and easy to install, you don’t need to hire a plumber and all you really need is a wrench. Most users say they installed the unit within 10 minutes. Unlike the reverse osmosis filters the Zuvo does not waste any water during the filtering process and takes up very little room.

Be aware that the unit needs an electrical outlet for the UV lamp to work and some reviewers complained about rubber piping getting in the way on the countertop (but it’s designed to go under the sink anyway).

Recommendation

The Crystal Clear is a 5 stage Reverse Osmosis is an under counter unit which removes almost all the impurities you can think of including fluoride. Nearly all the reviewers who have used this system say that it is fantastic and the water quality is excellent. As this is a 5 stage reverse osmosis unit the water goes through five different filters before it reaches your tap, so the water quality is exceptional. However there were a few complaints about the Crystal 5 stage water filter.

The unit is very difficult to install and everyone complained about the poor quality of the instructions that come with the unit. 80% of reviewer’s recommend getting a qualified plumber to do the install and some users said the unit leaked after they installed it.

Many customers found that the components provided did not fit their plumbing and had to buy parts from a local hardware store, whilst a significant amount complained that there were parts missing when the unit arrived.

Recommendation

The Crystal Clear 5 stage Reverse Osmosis Water filter works very well once it is installed, but the installation process is not user friendly when compared to other water filter systems available. Therefore we would only recommend this water filter if you are competent at DIY or can get a plumber to install the unit. The Aquasana AQ-4501.56 is one of the most popular above counter water filter systems available, 99% of reviewers spoke very highly of the unit. Everyone who purchased this product said that it was fairly easy to install, although a small number of users found that the connectors did not fit their plumbing and had to buy different connectors from the hardware store. Many people commented on the superior taste and overall good quality of the water after it had been filtered, which is what you would expect from an award winning water filter system. The Aquasana AQ-450.56 can remove sediments, chlorine, lead, herbicides, pesticides, cysts and a whole host of other unhealthy things from the water, but unfortunately it does not remove fluoride. The unit itself is not expensive to maintain, as the filters last on average 6 months and replacements cost around $50.

However the Aqusana AQ-450.56 is not perfect and there were a few minor issues mentioned by some users which you need to know. One user who tested the filtered water quality with a professional TDS meter said the water quality was only marginally better than unfiltered water. Some users found that the unit reduced their water pressure, also be aware that the water comes out of the tap at room temperature after going through the filtering process which some users were unhappy about. Also water continues to flow for a few seconds after you close the tap which means you waste a small amount of water on each use.

Recommendation
